The Christmas Song

Can you see the link between these 3 pictures?

gura riuluiWell, this is the story of the song Merry Christmas. It all started from an ancient carol from Gura Riului (my village in Romania – see picture 1). We used to sing this carol with a group of friends from that village. A very beautiful carol, although no one seemd to remember its origin anymore.

Then the melody came in, taylored on the rhythm and tonality of that carol. The lyrics came in an unlikely setting: as I was returning from a trip on one of the north-western Japanese islands, I was standing alone on the ferry’s upper deck. It was cold and dark, the sky filled with stars, and I was thinking of my friends and relatives from all over the world. The lyrics came in as the lines of o letter that I would have liked to send to all the people that I care about. As I had nothing to write on, I flattened the paper cup from which I was drinking my coffee, and spaper cuptarted writing on it in the dark. (picture 2)

Then, on the way back on the shinkansen, I developed the violin theme that I recorded the following days with Koma, in the mini home-studio. (picture 3)

For the music video,  some of my friends from different parts of the world sent me original footage of their cities in this month of december. So the music video includes a collage with images from those cities.

Ei bine, asta e povestea cantecului Merry Christmas.
